Ordered and received mouthpiece promptly. Even to Alaska. Thanks for a great mouthpiece. Great sound and versatile from loud and punchy to soft subtones. Playing this on a Yanagisawa T901 and plays full range nicely. Top quality product and you will not be disappointed. Thanks Jay for your dedication to the art of playing the sax with great products and inspiration!

This piece just joined my permanent collection. These are a serious top-contender among all the mouthpieces on the market, and are absolutely true to their name. BURNIN! It is a brilliant piece; perfectly cutting and edgy when you want it to be, super centered throughout all registers, sweet in the palm keys, and overall effortless to play. Jay and Jody did something really special with these pieces. You’re gonna want one of these in your collection!

I was so happy with my alto sax “Burnin” mouthpiece that I couldn’t wait for the tenor version to be released. But, before the release of the tenor “Burnin” mouthpieces (and after Jay Metcalf had tested the prototypes of them), I contacted Jay to tell him what problems I felt I needed to overcome with regard to my present mouthpieces, what I was hoping the “Burnin” would provide (the ability to go from loud and ballsy to soft and mellow over the entire range of the instrument) and what mouthpiece/tip opening I was using most. Then, I asked him for a recommendation, with regard to the “Burnin” facing he thought might be best. And … Bingo! He hit the nail on the head! What a mouthpiece! With it, I “phwoosh out” a low, mellow B-flats (or any other note), yet I can almost blow the doors off the entire range of my Mark VI, if that’s what I need. Congratulations, Jay and Jody! You have my highest recommendation!

This is my second Burnin’ mouthpiece. I got one of the early Burnin’ alto mouthpieces (7), and now play it for all my indoor and outdoor gigs. I couldn’t wait for Jay and Jody to come out with a tenor version. I ordered my tenor 7* Burnin’ mouthpiece a few weeks ago and am just blown away. It’s the most versatile mouthpiece I’ve ever played on tenor. A nice traditional tone and volume for indoors, and I can also play brighter and funkier when I need it. These guys are killing it! Feels like the Burnin’ pieces will be the vintage mouthpieces of the future. Ideal combination of modern CAD/CAM technology, from artisans that also know how to play!!

This mouthpiece is awesome. It has great projection and is amazingly free blowing.
Jay Metcalf from Bettersax did a great job developing this mouthpiece with Jody Espina from Jody-Jazz
I also have JJ HR* # 6, but I prefer the Burnin from Bettersax.
I would recommend this to anyone that plays the Sax

Jay Metcalf’s new burnin tenor mouthpice is truly BURNIN! I searched for about a year and a half for the right tenor mouthpiece and this is the one for me.
A 6* Bettersax Burnin Mouthpiece with a 1 and a 1/2 Legere studio cut reed is my set up on my YTS- 62 Yamaha Tenor saxophone.
I am not a professional, i have only been playing for a year and a half but i do know great quality and sound when i find it.

Thanks Sweetwater for selling Jay’s Bettersax Burnin Mouthpiece’s.
And a Great big Thank You to Jay Metcalf for creating your unique brand of saxophone mouthpiece’s.

I like the 6*. I had to adjust to softer reeds. I did a 7* first and it was like trying to blow up a car tire with the sax. So the 6* worked better from me when I some softer reeds. I am an intermediate player. The sound is brighter than my regular Jody Jazz 5* and it is my preferred mouthpiece for playing upbeat slections.

This piece can do it all . Very lush sweet tone at low volumes . Nice buzz and sweet tone at medium volume and almost limitless power with an edge when pushed. While still retaining a quality tone . A true hybrid between metal and rubber.

I recently purchased a Burnin’Tenor Sax 7* mouthpiece. I currently use a Ted Klum 7* New London and needed something with around the same tip opening and general feel that I could use when I need to play in situations that call for a quieter sound. I like the Burnin’ 7* because I can play softer, but it will also allow me to play out if need be. This mouthpiece plays well in every register with both low notes and altissimo coming out with relative ease. It feels very similar to my Ted Klum mouthpiece. In most situations I prefer the sound of a metal mouthpiece, but I’m definitely keeping my BetterSax Burnin’ Tenor mouthpiece for situations like small combo jazz or standards gigs that require a quieter, more controlled sound. It’s a pretty well rounded mouthpiece that I could probably play in most situations. I may try it on some of my pop and rock gigs to see how it cuts. I think it would be fine with a little adjusting on my part.

Purchased the Better Sax tenor 7* mouthpiece. Was a bit wary purchasing one online without blowing on one first, but mouthpiece is incredible! Wonderful sound. Am very pleased. This is now my “go to” mouthpiece for all jazz playing. Had prior mouthpiece for 20 years, but dropped and cracked it. Was using a metal mouthpiece prior to this purchase, but sound was too bright.

ay I just wanted to reach out and say THANK YOU!! I recently received the Burnin’ Sax Bari mpc. I play a 1960 Conn 12m Using a Silverstein Lig and a Fibracell #3 reed..WOW!! I can get a tonal range from Gerry Mulligan to Ronnie Cuber!! This piece is so amazing, I ordered one for Alto and Tenor. I tested my Burnin’ Sax Mpc on my 1927 Conn Alto, and was almost brought to tears. I have been searching for years to find a piece that works perfectly with my alto. The search is over!! Can’t wait to test the tenor piece tonight on my 1937 Conn 10m.

I have been playing on this for about a month and found a combination of lig/reed (Platner Rovner/Marca 3) that make my Yani Tw01 sing. Originally purchased as a brighter choice for me playing in our band. It plays with focus and some brightness for me. Up and down the horn it is strong and allows me to capture my sound. Ballads, straight-ahead and some funky stuff are no issue. A fun piece to play and at the price point is a great value compared to some that are double in price in hard rubber.
I play a modern horn and a 1938 Martin, neither horn complains. Thanks JM and JJ

I’ve owned more vintage mouthpieces than I can count for tenor and this mouthpiece will compete with and beat many of the best. Like most reviews the piece is very free blowing with plenty of edge when pushed. No compromise anywhere across the range of the instrument. Do not think the larger tip openings are required for a big sound. The piece will take all the air you can give. Using a size smaller than you’re used to may be good to try.

Oh my Jay Metcalf recommended this Mouthpiece and I feel like my tone and flexibility increased from 2 up to a 10! Granted it took me a few weeks to fully adjust to the larger tip opening. My consistency in the lower notes as well as the palm keys and altissimo is soooo much easier with this mouthpice. Thanks Jay… Peter

This mouthpiece represents a high return on investment. The cost-performance is amazing, and I can’t stop playing my horn with it. It’s free-blowing and works best with cane reeds, preferably Rigotti, but it also plays nicely with Vandoren reeds.

I have been playing on the same Dukoff D10 for 25 years. The Burnin’ 8* is the first mouthpiece I’ve used that really gives me the power that I’ve come to love about my Dukoff. I have found my new daily driver! The Better Sax Burnin mouthpiece is so flexible. Intonation is rock solid with it. The altissimo pops! I was amazed at how quickly I was able to get used to it! It usually takes me 2 weeks to really feel comfortable with a new piece, but this was less than 1! Lastly, you can’t beat that price. I can’t believe it’s hand finished! I would definitely recommend one!

Best mouthpiece I’ve ever owned and I’ve tried many in the 50+ years I’ve played. It brings out new lush sounds that I’ve yearned for. Easy blowing with great control. My go to mouthpiece had always been a Bobby Dukoff until now. The Dukoff is great if you need loud and bright but this burnin’ mouthpiece is that and more. It can be bright, it can be dark, it can be moody, it can be anything you imagine as you play. Highly recommended. I only wish that it came with a ligature.

I loved that right out of the box the ease of playing all the way through the range of the sax. Whether low notes or altissimo, I had the whole command of the range with no effort. I also loved the pocket of the tonal center that I found right away and look forward to trying different reed makers to see which enhances it the best.

Praise for Burnin' Mouthpieces

Probably the best alto mouthpiece I’ve ever played. The 6 tip opening is perfect for me.

Jay Metcalf’s BURNIN’ mouthpiece is a revelation. I don’t play alto often and in fact I have shied away from it for years because it was too hard to make the transition from tenor. The fact that I could put Jay’s mouthpiece on my alto, slap a reed on and get a great sound with flexibility right away was spectacular. I recommend it very highly and I’m sure those who try it will be equally enthusiastic.

I’m very proud of the BetterSax, BURNIN‘ Saxophone Mouthpiece because I believe that we created exactly what Jay asked for. A very free-blowing classic Hard Rubber Jazz Mouthpiece with a nice amount of Brightness. Jay’s design ideas, a prominent rollover baffle into a deep chamber, worked beautifully making the BURNIN‘ mouthpiece one of the all-time great mouthpieces.
Jody Espina
Founder of Jody Jazz Mouthpieces
I really enjoy playing on this mouthpiece. There’s a warmth and huskiness to the sound but also a brightness with some added air. Versatile over the entire range of the saxophone. Jay hit the nail on the head with this one.

The Burnin’ (HR) tenor sax mouthpiece had one of the darkest, warmest and lush tenor saxophone tones I have experienced. It was really sultry, buttery and sexy sounding and the sub-tones were just so smooth and lush sounding.

To my fellow alto sax players... please do yourself a favor and grab this BURNIN' mouthpiece. Make sure you pick up the ring ligature (amazing response with it). This free-blowing piece gives me all the sizzle and body that a hard hitting sax player would want. I'll be selling my other high end pieces as this BURNIN' piece just replaced them all.
William Prince

I've never been one for metal, although secretly I wanted to be, most metal pieces were too harsh for me or too difficult to control. This piece gives me the power that I wanted from metal while retaining the balance l've grown to love with rubber. Excited to see what sounds are possible!
Chris Bittner

The BetterSax Burnin’ metal tenor saxophone mouthpiece is a great tenor saxophone mouthpiece for those looking for a versatile tenor sax mouthpiece that can sound great on a jazz ballad or in a big band, while also providing the option of pushing the sound to a more powerful, aggressive and brighter tone when needed for louder genres of music like rock, pop or R&B. The tone does seem to lean more to the brighter side compared to the Burnin’ hard rubber version but I still consider the metal Burnin’ tenor saxophone mouthpiece to be in that tonal range of sound that makes it highly adaptable and versatile for all kinds of music.
Steve Neff
Renowned Mouthpiece Reviewer and Educator
I enjoyed this mouthpiece overall as it was free-blowing, easy to articulate with, and had a dark overall sound, particularly in the bottom range, but when pushed, you hear the brights, especially in the upperstack

What Burnin' Mouthpiece Players are saying...

Yesterday I received my Burnin #7 tenor mouthpiece and had the opportunity to play it for a few hours. I have been playing for over fifty years and have used many different mouthpieces. I must say hands down this is the the best one I have ever used. From the second I started to play it felt great. The sound and dynamics are incredible. I can only imagine how this will sound with a few more hours of play time. You and your team have done an outstanding job. Thank you! Keep up the good work.

I have the BetterSax Burnin' soprano mouthpiece from Sweetwater. At first thought it might just be a redesigned JodyJazz HR*.I was wrong, must say pleasantyly surprised! Well, after only an hour or so with the Burnin’ 7*, all I can say is WOW!  Having only played on metal mouthpieces (primarily from Jody and Theo) for the better part of 20 years, I wasn’t quite sure how I would adapt to the Burnin’, but it is absolutely incredible!  Plenty of projection, yet I can play soft and warm when needed.  Altissimo all the way down to low Bb is a breeze.  Intonation is spot on.  I can’t think of one thing that I’d change.

Thank you for having designed such an amazing mouthpiece. I've been trying it for a month and at the moment, all my old tenor mouthpieces are posted in wallapop to be sold I'm looking forward to coming back home from work every day to play the saxophone with it. It's a real pleasure.

Yeah 20 minutes and I was in love. I've been on a Theo Wanne Lakshmi 6* for quite a while. The Burnin' metal tenor is as good as, if not better, particularly up in the altissimo. They pop out with perfect intonation right up to F an octave above standard front F on the horn. Generally a very pleasing warm tone. The bottom end including subtoning are buttery smooth. When pushed it can be very Brecker.

You mentioned that the new Better Sax Metal mouthpiece for Tenor was one of the best you have played. Based on your recommendation, knowing the kind of person you are, with the heart of a teacher, I decided I would give it a try. Man, you were spot on. That is a great playing piece and as I get more used to it, I am certain I will be doing things on Tenor that I never was able to accomplish on my old setup. I tell everyone about you in Texas.... my students, other players, strangers!!! I have been playing and teaching for many years...! tell my wife all the time that I wish I had had you for a teacher when I was a young guy. I would have saved a lot of time learning the hard way.

It is such a beautiful piece of art!!! So well made. I picked it up, put a reed (that didn't quite fit) on and was so surprised by its immediate response throughout the whole range. I normally play a 10mfan Showtime 7** which asks for slightly lighter reeds (DSJ 2M/H) as it has a 2,76mm opening. That was too light for the burnin. So i put on a 2H and a 3S...but both didnt work too well. Either it started squeaking (too soft?) Or it was hard to play. Luckily enough i had a Vandoren Red Box 2,5 here....put it on and everything worked perfectly!!! Normally i play in a Jazz Combo and an Orchestra but now, for my new Soul Band, i needed something more powerful. And the burnin can offer tons of power! But having tested the burnin metal so far.. i am a little afraid that might be just a little too big of a step because of its brightness! That piece can be a beast....haha. Not so at all at lower volumes, though! It is indeed versatile.

I was looking for a new tenor mouthpiece. I had a list of mouthpieces I thought might hit the target. I wanted a brighter sound with more punch whilst at the same time giving me a rounder less strained lower Bb. A tall order! Sax Co are really helpful with guidance. We reduced my list to 8 mouthpieces and Sax Co set me up with the 8 mouthpieces to try. After 60 + minutes of switching between all the mouthpieces, it was clear that the Better Sax BURNIN' Tenor 6* was just right for me; the brightness and depth of sound were great, and for me, easily the best choice to make. I found the sound and notes are easier to hit over the full range of the instrument. Also I am so pleased with the low Bb! In all, a great mouthpiece which is a joy to play
