My guest in this interview Andrey Chmut, a talented Ukrainian saxophonist, who dared to dream big. Despite language barriers, he reached out to jazz legend Bob James via Facebook, expressing his admiration and sharing  a song of his with him that he hoped Bob would record a solo on.

To Andrey’s astonishment, Bob not only responded within three hours but also agreed to record it for him. This encounter ignited a remarkable journey into the power of music and the unexpected connections it fosters.

How He Found His Way to the Saxophone

Born in a small village in Ukraine, Andrey’s exposure to music was limited until a chance encounter with a saxophonist at his church ignited his passion for the instrument. Despite facing financial constraints and discouragement from teachers, Andrey’s determination led him to pursue music relentlessly.

With perseverance and the guidance of his mentors, he honed his skills, immersing himself in the language of jazz through intense practice and transcription of jazz greats like Charlie Parker and Cannonball Adderley.

Unlikely Friendship and Collaboration with Bob James

Andrey’s story took an extraordinary turn when Bob James not only recorded a solo for his song but also extended friendship and mentorship. Their collaboration blossomed, leading to numerous concerts in Ukraine, London, and the United States.

Amidst personal challenges, including the war in Ukraine, Bob’s unwavering support provided Andrey and his family refuge in the United States. Together, they embarked on a musical journey, culminating in a Grammy-nominated album and a shared commitment to inspiring others through the universal language of music.
