This is a project that we’ve been working on for years. There are lots of great cane reeds out there so it’s not easy to improve on those and offer something really new and different. So it took a long time, but we finally got there and the final result has totally surpassed our expectations.

First and foremost, these BetterSax Jazz Cut Reeds play amazingly, just like with mouthpieces we prefer a design that feels at home in a variety of styles.

We call these jazz cut reeds but that’s a very broad term meaning: reeds that are great for all popular styles of music where you want a nice balance between low medium and high frequencies coming out across the full range of the instrument.

This is a proprietary cut meaning that you can’t get this same reed profile in any other box of reeds, it is truly a unique and new design, not just new packaging.

Speaking of packaging, the main reason we wanted to develop the ideal saxophone reed was so that we could play great reeds everyday, and never again have to waste those stupid single use plastic reed holders.

It is actually crazy that people are still packaging reeds in those things. We are literally throwing 10s of millions of those into the garbage every year.

BetterSax reeds come in cardboard sleeves, the boxes are cardboard and we don’t wrap them in cellophane, because it’s entirely unnecessary and wasteful.

It’s time that the saxophone community insists that we end the single use plastic reed sleeve now. If your favorite reed brand is still using plastic in their packaging and that bothers you, you can send them a message, and buy reeds that don’t until they change.

Our reeds come from French cane growing in the south of France and we developed them with Marca, a family owned business that has been making premium reeds for multiple generations.

Extra added bonus, BetterSax Jazz Cut reeds are made with organically sourced cane. It’s another win for the planet and hopefully that’s the direction all other reed manufacturers will go in.

A well balanced reed. Played very well with little prep. Nice tone throughout the range of my alto sax. Looking forward to checking out the tenor reeds.

Best reeds I’ve ever played! These pair perfectly with my Burnin’ mouthpiece. Thanks for the no plastic cases. Awesome!

These are really fantastic reeds. Every reed in my box of 10 plays to my satisfaction right out of the box. I have tried many cane and synthetic reeds and these are the best! Jay’s sales pitch on Facebook seemed really authentic and sincere and I went for it and am I ever happy I did!

The BetterSax Jazz reeds have become my go-to choice. They provide the stability and control needed to sound great on all ranges of the horn. They last and sound great for a long time, which is a huge plus for both the wallet and one’s playing. They have a very balanced sound with excellent projection. Whether I’m playing ballads or bebop, these reeds respond beautifully.

  5. B. Huber (verified owner)

Those reeds have a great response and consistency throughout the entire box of reeds.

Promised Jay on IG that I would get them and write a real review. THE GOOD: Played excellently right out of the box and is mad consistent throughout. And they play easily. I have trouble playing now because I took 10 years off. These are the best right out of the box.

THE BAD: I don’t like this sound at all. I want bright, and edgy. It can never be bright enough. These sound like jazz and concert had a baby. It’s somewhat muted – maybe warm and round, but NOT bright.

I do like when I really blow on like G or low D . . . it’s the best I’ve ever sounded on those notes. But overall nah. I’ll get a (really bright) SYOS mouthpiece soon and see how that combination works.

  7. Peter Sibilia (verified owner)

Ordered both the alto and tenor. I have been happy with the reeds i have been using but am tired of the single-use plastic. I am happy to say these reeds have played great across the entire range on both instruments and come with minimal packing. Thanks for making a great product and eliminating waste.

      So glad to hear it!

Like everybody else who plays, I have tried all kinds of reeds,. I eventually settled on Vandoren V21 for classical and Java Red for everything. So why these reeds? #1, they are great quality reeds and their sound is right there where where I like, comparable to the ones I mentioned above. #2, the packaging. No plastic! Thank you! Thank you! They are on the soft side; I’d say a 3.5 feels like a Java Red 3.

  9. Kate (verified owner)

I love your reeds! Typically, breaking in a reed is a killer, but your reads break in quickly and work so well! I also love that there is no plastic involved! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  10. Bruce Freedman (verified owner)

These reeds are totally unique. I’ve tried different reeds over the years but never had a reed play this
uniquely. It is just like trying a different mouthpiece. They have a quality of sound that is different from the sound I get with other reeds, that I’m just getting used to. They play with even intonation all over the horn. And they last for a very long time.
I have no idea how the folks who developed them developed them! I have two friends who have also bought their first box and they feel just as I do. They are blown away. I first bought a box of 2’s and wasn’t sure about them, they were too easy to play, too free blowing but then I bought a box of 21/2’s and they gave enough resistance to be great.
Every horn play must try these.
    Cheers, Bruce

This is a great reed and if there’s people wanting to try new reeds then they should try out the bettersax reeds

These are quite ‘easy’ in my experience; the Reed works with you rather than fights with you. With a burnin mouthpiece they sing wonderfully as well; it’s clear that this is the intended combination— regardless of your setup however, I’d say these hold their own very well.

  14. Jim Andrews (verified owner)

I’m glad I found these. I have never had so many play right out of the box without needing work, and they sound great. I think I’m done with synthetics and going natural again. And thanks for the responsible packaging.

  15. Devyn Edwards (verified owner)

Yes! I have been playing for 20 Years and these are my favorite unfiled reeds next to the Rico orange boxes. My go to is the Vandoren Red Box but these broke in way faster and more eco-friendly. They are consistent top-to bottom and sound like Red Box Vandoren filed reeds. The only thing that I am struggling with is the restorage of this read after I use it. I’ll have to get Jay’s reed case now. Gotta get the tenor box now

I’ve played sax for many years. Finding consistent quality reeds was always a problem no matter the price. These reeds are not only excellent they are very consistent. All in the box are great reeds. I’m using the 3.0 alto reeds on a vintage Gregory mouthpiece. They have the sound and feel I like if the “feel” makes any sense. I mean they are controllable and versatile. I have found my favorite brand of reeds.

Ok I’m only three years into my alto journey but the Better Sax reed makes me sound lik3e I have been playing much longer than I have. Notes are smoother and easier to play and to play in tune. I’m using the 2.5 here when I’ll use 2s in some Vandoren brands. Worth the try try you wont be disappointed. I feel like they last a long time as well… although I’m not always certain when a reed is dead or it’s just me having an off day? Great reed check it out.

I love the sound of the reeds. Nice tone, easy to play reeds. I ordered strength 3, but in my case I might need 3 1/2 instead of 3. Overall they play amazingly great!

Well, bought a box of alto sax five 2/5 reeds and how rare for reeds, because they are all playable and can do the deed..that rhymes.
So far not one bad egg in the box; and was able to get them at the black Friday discount. Pretty soon will get the tenors.
    thank you Jay and Sweetwater.

I use this reed with the mouthpiece that came with my sac. the sound is very rich. I will buy some for my tenor.

I play Alto sax, I use #2. I am in my 70’s. I have more control with the #2. But could not hit some low notes. I tried one reed, and wow . I played for 2 hrs., and hit all the notes. I like the reed. Good sound and control. Thank you for this. Louis Bencivenga. Alto sax player……

Amazing reed. Switched from a 2.5 RICO. Instantly changed my sound and tone!!

  25. Bob Smith (verified owner)

Excellent reed right out of the box! I followed the advice from the reed video and soaked the reed in water before use and it worked great. I never had a reed work this good right out of the box, it usually takes a little use for me to get comfortable with it.

I’ve been playing on the BetterSax 2.5 alto reeds for about 6 weeks now, and I really like them. In addition to the nice bright tone they contribute to, I find them very responsive. My articulation is crisp, and the notes pop. Altissimo is easier to use than with other brands, and the BetterSax reeds are consistently high quality from top to bottom. Haven’t found a bad one out of the box yet. They break in fairly quickly. I recommend that any jazz saxophone player give them a try.

Love these reeds! I played many years ago and was having trouble getting back into it with hard reeds, and these (2’s) were the perfect stepping stone to get me back and playing again. They sound great and feel great as well! Get your confidence back with these 🙂

The Better Sax tenor reeds have the exact balance of resistance I need in all registers. I can play the palm key register ppp with no wavering of pitch or intonation. And crescendo to fff smoothly and decrescendo to ppp, no problem. Out of the box of 5, 4 were identical and 1 was slightly softer. I will be very happy when these hit the market.

I have been playing saxophone for 57 years and like most people I have had to always battle reeds. I tried using Better Sax reeds on my tenor sax a few months ago and I got really excited.  Every one of them plays great and I really like the tone they give me. I just put them on my mouthpiece and blow!!  I love them. They JUST work every time. They have saved me so much time. I also really like simple, "green" packaging. I only wish I had been playing them for the last 50 years. Nice job, Jay!!!

I've just discovered your BetterSax Reeds and to put it tamely, your reeds have blown my mind out of the water. I am completely in shock, they are the best reeds I've ever played, something I never say but I have to tell you that I'm blown away.

The BetterSax reed I tried played well and I noticed more of the brights in my sound compared to other reed cuts and brands which I find to be darker

Praise for the Jazz Cut Reeds

Got them... and they're awesome. Great job. Best reeds I've played, and I played all of them.

I received the alto and tenor sax reeds. What a revelation they have proved to be! After all these years to have finally found reeds with enough depth to maintain tone quality throughout the entire range of the instrument! Notes above the staff are better in tune and sound larger, versus how they used to sound, which was rather thin. I also think these will be more durable.

I just opened a box of BetterSax reeds, selected one at random, and was shocked at how much I enjoyed this reed! The tone was great throughout the range, from subtone to altissimo- nice and clear with good projection, but still fat. After playing it for an hour, I went back and play-tested the few broken in reeds I had been using and there was no comparison.

I received my new Alto reeds from Sweetwater a few days ago and so far I really like them. I got the 2.5 strength which seem to play similar to the Vandoren red jazz 2.0 but I can get a better tone on the high notes with the Better Sax reed. I play a Better Sax Burnin mouthpiece 6 tip opening.
