The responsiveness to the high notes were immaculate and the keys were light and had a good feeling to it.

Got one of the earliest releases on preorder. Shipped as a box within a box to protect the setup which was perfect. Jay Metcalf sacrificed some aesthetics like elaborate engraving to provide the best instrument possible for the money. The alto was fantastic. The tenor more impressive because Sweetwater really got this one right. Any horn relies on its body tube for intonation and this is like the alto in tune across the range. Popping the keys without blowing produces a great sound up and down as well. Key height and spring tension are terrific. I love the cognac lacquer and Super20 underslung octave mechinism that Yani horns have adopted. The new beginners mouthpiece from Bettersax is included, I put in on my Yamaha 62. Not a huge fan of the ligature, so make sure you have a Rovner or other lig available. No horn this well crafted is really a beginner’s horn. Frankly, I have a collection of instruments that are immediately obsolete because of setup and old mechanisms. This is a fun horn with a sound that reminds me of the Super20. The case is Metcalf-no rattling around. This is all a new student will need. It is more solid and better crafted than many. It lacks only the floral amd precious metal embellishments of much more expensive horns. But most of them are also made in China without the classic American finishing touches you get in Indiana.

Can’t say enough good about this horn. I’ve played it for a bit now. Keying is smooth, ergonomic, fast, with accuracy in the higher registers. A great deal, and a wonderful instrument to play, with a load of features that make this really a professional horn in the guise of a student horn.

Short and sweet… this horn is crazy good. Light and responsive underneath my fingers. So easy to play. The sound coming from the horn makes me melt. This will be my performance sax. Thank you American French guy, my pet name for Jay, for building this amazing horn at this price.

I bought the better sax tenor because I’m a big fan of Jay Metcalf. His instructional videos took me from intermediate to a professional sound in a bout a year’s time. This tenor is no exception. It’s beautiful to behold and plays really well. His collaboration with JodyJazz (Espina) tells us just how in the know he is in the Sax industry. Furthermore, he was a repair tech for many years. The point to all of this is……..everyone wants the overprices Selmer(s). But, that won’t make you a better sounding player. Practice will. So if I were starting out again or in the intermediate range and had not bought a sax (other than a student model). Then this is what I’d purchase. Great horn, great look, great cost. You can’t go wrong.

Jay has gone and done it again! I received my tenor in February with the first shipment and loved it right from the beginning. I fell in love with the dark cognac finish when the alto came out and am glad Jay has followed through with this same finish on the tenor. The under-slung octave mechanism is just an added bonus.
The first thing I noticed was how the low notes exploded when they came out! The sax is consistently in tune up and down the horn. A big concern for me was good ergonomics. So much so that I contacted Jay about this before putting my name on the pre-order list. I definitely haven’t been disappointed. The spatula key transitions are as smooth as butter and are not out of reach with one searching or over-extending the pinky. On my alto and Yamaha tenor I was borrowing, my pinky would always jam under the keys when transitioning between C# and B. If my pinky wouldn’t jam under these keys, then it felt as if I had to go over a big hill transitioning between C#, B and Bb. This is definitely not the case with the Better Sax tenor. I’m extremely happy with the key work and layout as well as the many other features you usually only see on professional models.
This shouldn’t be sold as a student horn because it really isn’t. The only thing student is the price and as the word gets out I truly think people will start buying these horns to not only learn on but keep as their main instrument, especially those who learn this instrument as an adult. The only thing really sacrificed is the fancy engraving you see on professional horns. However, something needed to be sacrificed in order to give us an instrument of this quality at the price it is being offered for.
The staff at Sweetwater is awesome to deal with and I have to give a shout-out to Chris, my sales engineer. I had my first gig to play 2 days after receiving my new sax. The sax I had been playing was falling apart and couldn’t be used for this gig. He made sure I not only received my sax on time but with a few extra days to become familiar with it. All around a very good experience. Jay did well partnering up with Sweetwater.

This saxophone is the game changer. Plays with a free open sound from top to bottom. The added adjust screws on the side Bb opens up the high g altissimo fingering. Only a sax player designer would add this screw adjustment. I leak light the horn and found no major issues and mostly tweak the adjust screws to my preferences. Student of pro is going to enjoy this horn for years of performances. Thanks to Jay for offering this horn at a very reasonable price point. Bopalot

Received the sax the other day and it is a good value. Key design and response is excellent had to do a small adjustment on the octave mechanism and it works fine intonation is right on. All in all a great instrument for the price.

The action is extremely comfortable. The horn is free blowing! Intonation is even up and down the horn. It has a gorgeous sound. Definitely a pro horn at a fraction of the cost

After more than 20 years since I sold my tenor saxophone, I decided to return. I had saxophones like Selmer, Yamaha 62 and Keilwhort, all of which I sold, but the nostalgia returned. Unfortunately, the cost of these instruments is very expensive and that is where I began to ask what options I could have. I called my store in sweetwater and my salesperson Mike highly recommended the Bettersax tenor. He told me that two of his colleagues bought it and spoke very highly of that instrument, so I decided to buy it and all I can say is that I don’t regret buying it. Its sound, intonation and ergonomics are excellent, it is simply fantastic. I congratulate Jay and thanks to Sweetwater for thinking about providing an excellent instrument at a very good price.

So far I have been very happy with my new Better Sax Tenor. I have been playing Alto for about 4 years so I have had to make a few adjustments in my fingering techniques but overall I think it’s a quality instrument with a great sound.

A wonderful tenor saxophone. When I saw Mr. Metcalf demonstrate it and vouch for its quality and design – I decided to buy it. It is as good as Mr. Metcalf claims – I am only a hobbyist – intermediate player but I have found the Bettersax classic tenor to have the best ergonomics I have experienced on a tenor. I have played mainly student models and have had issues with the palm keys but this instrument seems like it was made for me, no problems at all. The intonation is great, the key action for me is wonderful. Thank you Mr. Metcalf for designing such a wonderful tenor sax. WJ

this instrument sounds amazing for its price. Easy to learn on. Mouth piece is really good. If your considering this instrument check out bettersax on YouTube! Jay is an amazing person and a quality teacher. Packaged very well. They give you everything you need to start playing on. Case is good.

First thing first! Sweetwater delivery the instrument on time and my rep Tiberius always follow up after the sale. Great team! Now with the horn, Jay Metcalf is the MAN! The sax is very well designed. From the ergonomics to the post to body for a light trim the instrument is a winner. The intonation is great in all notes. The included mouthpiece speaks right away, is a plastic mouthpiece but it very well could be your one and only just like the horn. The case is light and keeps the instrument tight and secure there is not moving around stuff. I play on a Yamaha 62 Purple Logo and I bought these sax with the intention of doing an overhaul on my 62. Now, I don’t know if this sax will be my primary sax. Time will tell so far so good. Another proof that instruments from China with the proper quality control in the factory can be be excellent instruments. Jay did it! Go for the soprano Jay!

I’m two weeks into acclimating myself to the Classic Tenor. This horn replaces a Bundy 2 tenor which I bought after a 20+ year absence from playing. Intonation and ergonomics are very good. I especially like the ease of the left pinky table. Out of the box I found E 1 and F 1 to be stuffy but are improving as I work on the reeds and my embouchure adjusts to the Burnin’ mouthpiece. Overall I’m liking the feel of the horn and hopeful that the mouthpiece, reeds and embochure come together to move things up to 5 stars.

My son really like it. He said it sounds great.

I had read and viewed online many reviews about the Better Sax Classic and how great it is at this price. The hype is true-my experience is this saxophone is not just a “a good instrument for the price” it is just a great instrument! The price makes it an even better deal. It plays in tune and has a beautiful tone. And a shout out to the Sweetwater techs for setting it up. I played it shortly after receiving it at a performance with no issues.

I purchased the BetterSax Classic tenor after much research and comparison shopping on line. I wanted a tenor to fill out
my collection of saxophones (soprano to bass) but had no need to purchase a professional level instrument since I will be playing it strictly for my own personal enjoyment. The BetterSax Classic was the obvious choice and has proven to fully meet my expectations.
PROS: beautiful appearance with the dark lacquer and engraving…keywork and mechanical refinement well above “student level” (see below)… exellent quality pads, springs, felts and corks…a decent mouthpiece and a good quality case. The instrument arrived well set-up with no leaks or major adjustment issues (see below). Response and intonation have been impressive from the outset.
CONS are few: the supplied ligature is pretty basic, but does not adjust easily which makes getting a good seal between reed and mouthpiece problematic… the low C#/B adjustmnent and right hand Bis key linkage needed tweaking for best results… the spring tension of the octave key on the neck was way too stiff causing sluggish changes between octave vents in the upper register. I was able to make all necessary adjustments resulting in an impressively smooth and refined feel up and down the entire range. This horn is smooth! The only other negative is that the neck is very loose fitting and requires really torquing down on the neck tenon screw to lock securely in place. Once the screw is completely (as in “it won’t turn any more”) tightened, the neck doesn’t move. This isn’t a problem for me, but a beginning band student wouldn’t have the strength to fully tighten that screw and would forever be chasing his/her mouthpiece due to a loose neck. Never a good thing.
FWIW: I am a classical player and wondered how this horn would work in that setting. Turns out, very well indeed. I am getting a beautiful, dark, clear sound with great response and intonation using a Selmer S80 C* mouthpiece / Vandoren MO ligature / Vandoren V12 #3 reeds. I could easily use this set up in a professional quartet or wind band and fit right in.
On the whole, this sax is a remarkable value. As advertised, it really does offer many features found on upper level instruments at a bargain price. Sweetwater’s service has been exemplary from start to finish. Highly recommended!

I was about to buy a used Yamaha Professional, as many advise on the online forums, and I am so glad I got this BetterSax instead. I am a beginner, but I have a couple of cheap saxophones to compare to. This is joy to play and makes me want to play every day now.

Even as a novice to the saxophone, I can tell quality when I see it. This BetterSax Tenor is fantastic! I watched tons of videos where others, including pro players, played this sax and made comparisons to much more expensive models, and it stood up great in every case. I was especially persuaded by the “blind” comparison videos where the BetterSax was played in comparison to much more expensive brands and, in most cases, it was VERY difficult to tell the difference (when using the same mouthpiece and reed combo on both saxes). I have had mine for a couple of weeks now and I am thrilled with my choice. The cognac lacquer gives it the coolest vintage look, and the keys are super smooth, but the overall build quality has the tolerances set so that there is NO slack anywhere, but it is not “tight” at all. This sax is a total pleasure to play. It performs WAY above the price point! Definitely does not feel like a “beginner” level instrument. I can see playing this sax for MANY years to come.

Jay and sweetwater knocked this clean out of the park. This horn is a player, tight key work pads sealing like a drum, neck fit to tenon is spot on. The action is smooth and tone/intonation are very good. The pinky table is positioned a little further in then I am used too but a few hours of playing had me adjusted to it. The palm keys sing full and warm, low end is fine but not incredible. I truly believe this to be an amazing value. I’d have no hesitation gigging this horn.

I had a Stroke and decided to use Music as my Therapy and Recovery contacted SWeet water(Ivan Salazar) and made the Deal to acquire the Better Sax Tenor, they should change their name to Holywater!! It Exceeded my expectations !! The Notes in lowest octave KA BOOM !! Highest Octave- Very Clear Not Anemic or thin sounding, very satisfied purchase.

Not a bad horn. Tone is relatively good and intonation is pretty consistent. I did not care for the key layout on the upper left hand and the palm keys. I had some trouble getting to the B key and bis key, just different from my main horn. It also seems to have a problem with saliva not collecting at the bottom of the horn. I would have a wet left hand after about twenty minutes of playing. Not an issue with primary horn, so something is different with the design. Palm key notes were a little thin compared to my primary horn. I play a P. Mauriat 66R as my primary horn and I was hoping this would be a great choice for a second sax.

I Really like the saxophone but there is one minor issue with it…The lower stack Octave key was stuck to the metal where the pad contacts the saxophone. I was able to release it but now the pad makes a sticky sound if I don’t leave a Key Leaf in between. It’s a little annoying but I can get by…may need to have the pad replaced, it is not a major issue now that it does release from the saxophone. I have not used the mouthpiece that came with the horn because I had invested in a Jody Jazz HR* 6…which sounds great with a Legere American Cut reed…currently using a 2.0. Horn plays in tune and sounds great.

Terrific horn! Feels and sounds great. Biggest bang for the buck.

I was looking for an affordable quality tenor sax to get back into playing after a 30 year absence. Even 30 years ago I was just a beginner when I stopped playing so I needed an affordable quality sax to see if I was still interested after such a long absence. I have been MORE than satisfied with the Better Sax Tenor. My former sax was a 1920’s heavy horn which was not suited for what I want to play so this sax has been absolutely perfect. Not only is the Better Sax a bit lighter it seems to be so much more balanced. I don’t have to fight with it to play. It looks unbelievable with its dark caramel high gloss finish. Unless someone is a professional player, it looks like a sax that would sell for hundreds of dollars more. The keys are quick and are extremely ergonomically located. The bundle is more than sufficient to get started out of the box. The bottom line is this sax is fantastic, but that’s only half of the story.
My progress has been much faster than I anticipated, but I can’t attribute that to just the sax and practicing. GEOFF SCHNEIDER, my sales associate at Sweetwater knocks it out of the part with periodic unsolicited phone call follow ups asking me about my progress and answering all of my questions about playing and caring for the instrument. I truly have never encountered this level of customer service weeks and months after the purchase! He has given me tips and shortcuts to solve some of the tough areas I couldn’t find online or materials I’ve purchased. When I mentioned to him I might be ready for individual one on one private lessons, he actually reached out from Indiana to Ohio and found a sax teacher within 12 miles of my home! He sees everything I purchase online at Sweetwater and follows the purchase up with support and recommendations regarding the product. When I was making my purchase, I received a message that a Sweetwater representative would guide and support me throughout the experience, I couldn’t imagine how much the support would be. true value of Geoff’s follow up phone calls and his interest in my progress. You can’t go wrong here. Whether you buy the Better Sax or another brand I highly suggest you buy it at Sweetwater. This review is unsolicited!

I just received the “BetterSax Classic” Tenor Saxophone, and I couldn’t be more impressed. This saxophone is exceptionally durable, plays effortlessly in tune, and comes truly ready to go straight out of the case. As a professional musician in New Jersey, I needed an instrument that could handle the demands of high-energy performances—think swinging around a packed wedding dance floor, the occasional bump or fall—without sacrificing sound quality or reliability.
The tone is rich and versatile, making it an excellent choice for everyone from beginners to seasoned pros. The attention to detail is evident in every aspect of the build; the keywork feels fluid and precise, offering full mechanical freedom across the entire range of the horn. It simply plays the way you want a great saxophone to play.
Kudos to Jay and the entire BetterSax team for delivering such a thoughtfully designed instrument!
Side note: The video clips included with this review capture my very first time playing the horn, straight out of the packaging. I wanted to give the most accurate representation of what you can expect right out of the box — and accuracy is exactly what you get!

Very nice instrument just not deep enough for me

Received my better sex tenor in great condition. Except when I tried going up & down the scale. Low G shuddered. I discovered a leak in the necks octave vent. Tried experimenting using one of my spare tenor neck. Plays good no defect! I think the neck is bend. But the rest of the instrument is in great tune. Sweet water was suppose to inspect thoroughly. Really?? I just need the neck replace. Its a great saxophone. I love the respond. I can finally play the lows. Upper Keys is perfect pitch!! Love the Better Sax Tenor. I sound like a pro!!
