Really, at this price, this kind of quality is really unbeatable. I have only had the horn for 3 months at the time of this review. The whole range of the saxophone speaks effortlessly with nice projection and edge to it. Although the tone isnt as complex as pricier saxophones, there are plenty of video examples of how this horn can hold its own. Definitely a hefty saxophone for its size, but I think it also shows up in how hefty this horn can sound. As a recording artist, I like how this is sounding. Im still experimenting with different setups to dial in the sound a bit more, but this horn has the features and qualities that I look for in a work horn.

This is an extremely full-featured and well-made horn. It plays like it’s been professionally set up out of the box, it has all the keys my son will need as he develops as a player, and the long list of nerdy little feature details really does improve the experience. I’ve put this in the hands of several music teachers and pro sax players, and heard nothing but positive feedback. We did opt to add a Yamaha 4C mouthpiece which we found played a little freer for the beginner, but the included one is fine. I threw my Meyer 6M on it just to test, and it rips! Since we’ve purchased, I’ve seen several other new saxes from value brands (Jupiter, etc.) side by side, and they’re not in the same league.

I decided to purchase the BetterSax alto after watching videos showing the quality control process that it has gone through at Conn-Selmer and Sweetwater. I also watched the developer, Jay Metcalf, compare it to a Yamaha student sax. I investigated renting an instrument first, but decided the purchase of the BetterSax alto made better financial sense to me. It arrived quickly and is absolutely beautiful. I only played for a brief time over 35 years ago. After letting it warm up a bit, I put it together and was able to get a real nice sound out of it. Thank you Jay Metcalf and Sweetwater Music for providing a great instrument at an affordable price. I am confident I made the right decision in purchasing the BetterSax alto. The online resources at BetterSax.com are an added bonus.

We have all heard that phrase…well, in this case that phrase could not be farther from the truth…before I purchased this Better Sax alto I was using my first alto purchased almost thirty years ago..that horn was and still is a great horn except that it is in need of a full regulation and all new quality pads (which is quite expensive) any note below low D produced a high pitched squeal. I thought it must be me.so I stopped blaming myself, my embouchure, the reed and took a close look at some cracked & peeling leather pads and a few other things…so anyway after learning about the Better Sax alto at the unheard of price of $ from Sweetwater music I purchased one..I now remember what it is like to play a well built well regulated saxophone . From top register to the bottom B flat…Blow soft tones or loud tones, it’s all there. I am so glad that I bought this horn…I first learned about Better Sax from Jay Metcalf. Check him out ..this cat definitely knows what he is talking about…Dan Paris

My son was playing on a Nuvo jSax to see if he was interested in learning the saxophone and he just recently graduated to this BetterSax. So, I have no way of comparing this to much previous playing experience of my own. I did study music in school (part of this being music education, where you learn the workings of and how to play many different instruments) and was around a bunch of different sax players, and this instrument seems to be well constructed. I would say don’t hesitate to purchase for your student!
I must also commend CJ Onyx and the Sweetwater staff on their customer service. The sax shipped quickly and got to us safe and sound… with the exception of the ligature, which was somehow deformed. I told customer service about it and they sent me a new upgraded ligature, free of charge. Sweetwater is an excellent company that goes out of its way to make sure that your purchasing experience is incredible. Thank you!

Watching Jay Metcalf on the BetterSax youtube channel I saw him release his line of saxophones. I have played student models in the past. I currently own a YAS-62 that is about 22 years old from my college days. Now my daughter is learning saxophone. I purchased the Bettersax Alto for my daughter, I opened the box and ensured it played well. I was very surprised how professional this saxophone feels under the hands! The BetterSax Alto plays really well, seems to be well in tune. My daughter enjoys it, it seals a bit better than my aged YAS-62 so she is playing better now than ever!
Again, I am really impressed by how this saxophone feels and it plays really well. I did not try the mouthpiece that came with it as we have mouthpieces we use for play.
Highly recommend this instrument, it was setup and tested by Sweetwater and I did not find any concerns with the instrument upon opening!
The case is also a high point, it holds the saxophone really well.

I want to thank the owner of the company and team for the best saxaphone. Its the best gift my little ever received. He going high school this fall and I want to him have best saxaphone for his band class and you guys came in clutch

I was delighted to to find a well recommended alto sax that I could afford having “lost” my Yamaha 62 that I have been playing for the last 5 years.
I have had the Better Sax Alto for a little over a month now and I am absolutely thrilled with it! It plays smoothly from top to bottom and the intonation is slightly better for me than the old Yamaha. I love the rich dark vibrant tone and I am enjoying it being a little lighter in weight. I was a little nervous when I placed the order (even though I had researched this sax well), as it seemed so inexpensive for a new sax and I didn’t have the opportunity to try before buying, but I need not have worried, I am very happy indeed with my new sax.
Ordering from Canada and having to go through customs import means things don’t always go smoothly, but I received my sax from Sweetwater within a week, with no problems.
Top marks for the Better Sax, the helpful staff at Sweetwater and the delivery folks too.

Well it seems to be everything everyone has said about this horn. It plays great right out of the box and sounds great too.
I have been playing a vintage Buescher 400 Alto for years but it seemed to need constant adjustment and parts were getting hard to find. I sold it recently and after reading tons of reviews and watching every Youtube video I made the plunge.
Happy I did. Sounds good, plays good and looks great!

First, you’ll want to make sure you have a mouthpiece or even just a ligature that you already love to use…the included ligature was bent to the point of “not usable”. Sweetwater product support took care of this speedily by sending me a REVNOR “leather” unit which works quite good with the included mouthpiece.
Comparing this sax to my superb Yamaha YAS26 makes me wish I could go back in time and wait for this BetterSax on sale and save nearly $! But the Yamaha is my first and I will not part with her but I have noticed I choose to play the BetterSax more due to it’s sound (not better than the Yamaha, just different) which presents a tad more “jazzy” whereas the Yamaha is more “orchestral” (precise tones, etc.) Silly me LOVES the “silver”/brass colors on the Yamaha and I see the pretty Dark Gold Lacquer as a tad “boring”. I do wish these were not built in China, but this price is the result and thus far appears to be as good as any student sax I’ve heard and/or played. Has many features of “professional” saxes (compare specs and you’ll see) thus I feel this model is an amazing bargain! Plenty of utube videos comparing everything to BetterSax. I will watch for a sale on their Tenor unit now.

I am a beginner that just started playing the saxophone at the beginning of last month, I’ve had 6 lessons. As with most I assume, I started with a rental sax which was probably the right thing to do at first as I wanted to make sure I wanted to do this.
One week in and I was really excited about learning the sax and along with lessons I signed up for BetterSax Core Essentials Course, which has been extremely helpful. Through Jay’s website I was introduced to Sweetwater and the BetterSax Student Alto Sax. I figured if I was going to give myself the best option for success I’d go ahead and get one after having some problems with the rental horn I had.
Yes, it is beautiful and all that, but compared to what I was previously using it was so much easier to play! It seemed like my practicing improved within days and I’m really enjoying playing and progressing on this saxophone!
Matthew Harris has been so helpful with advice and guidance on mouthpieces and reeds, and it is wonderful to be able to actually talk to and email back and forth with him.
Do not hesitate buying the horn… it is the best purchase I’ve made in a very long time…
Randall C. –
I am totally impressed with this sax on every level. The build quality is much more than I would anticipate. It is beautiful to behold and the additional adjustments in key places can save trips to the tech for adjustment. And the underslung octave key is a really nice touch, adding sophistication to the overall look.
I put the sax through in intonation test with my electronic tuner and was shocked at how accurate the intonation is. I have played instruments that cost much more then this where the tuning was nowhere near as close.
I had two really great rehearsals and finally got to use it on a gig and I have no reservations describing this as a pro level horn. Frankly, advertising it as a beginner sax is, in my humble opinion, a misnomer. The greatest compliment I can give it is that I can totally forget about it while playing and concentrate on my music. It is easy blowing and the tone is outstanding. I love the way it resonates while playing. It is the best bang for my buck of any sax I have ever owned.
I hope I get to try out a Better Sax tenor one day. It may be hard to talk me out of my 1928 Conn but who knows…?

I’ve been watching Jay Metcalf’s videos for a few years now and when he started talking about the Better Sax Alto I was intrigued. I at that time had my Selmer Super Action 80 Series II Alto so I really was not thinking too much about the Better Sax at that time. I was very impressed on how it sounded. I had to sell my SA80II alto for part of my down payment on my new house. I really wanted a new sax instead of one someone had used for years. I was really wanting a professional sax but the cost is too high for me. I thought because I’ve heard on YouTube people playing the Better Sax I would like to try it out for myself to see if I liked it and the price doesn’t break the bank. When I got it I was blown away on how great it sounds and ease of playing. I still can’t believe that as good as this sax plays and sounds that it would be considered a student sax. I didn’t use the mouthpiece that came with it so I can’t speak on how the mouthpiece is but I’ve used my Theo Wanne Earth #6 and my Jody Jazz HR* Custom Dark #7 and man that sax sounds every bit as good as any professional I’ve played. When I get the money saved up I’m buying the Better Sax Tenor. Thank you Jay Metcalf, Conn/Selmer and Sweetwater. You guys are the best. Feel free to use my review anytime.

I had a 12th grade student of mine buy this sax as his parents didn’t want to spend the money on a pro horn, the bad student horn was really holding him back! I just want to say first that I’ve been a pro player & teacher for 45+ yrs (classical & jazz), so I’ve tried a lot of horns! The big thing I feel about this horn is I wish I had one of these when I began sax! The sound is musical, (unlike the student Yamaha) and can be flexible to do bends when needed. A change in mouthpiece will make it sound like a jazz or classical sax.
The only issue I found was the low Eb & C key rollers were not able to be screwed in, there are threads on the rod but nothing to screw into on the key. My student has found that the rod & roller has actually fallen off the key several times. I suggested to either send the horn back or use clear nail polish on the rod head so it won’t back out…it has worked so far for about 6 months. Imagine the look on his mom’s face when he asked to borrow her clear nail polish LOL!
The key work is almost as good as a Selmer or pro level Yamaha, it feels very comfortable under the fingers (also better than the Yamaha BTW). I noticed the high D, Eb & F keys are smaller & shorter than usual, most likely done for 5th & 6th graders so they can reach the keys, I had my student use rubber slip on key risers which solved that issue. For the money this horn can’t be beat, really a fantastic price! I also want to mention that I’ve been dealing with Sweetwater for 20+ years and they are a great store with very helpful & knowledgeable folks! I’m glad they are now selling band instrumental items & horns.

This saxophone is an amazing accomplishment – to get something that works this well to be this affordable. I have been playing tenor and soprano sax for years and finally thought, “why not alto?” I purchased this after renting a Yamaha YAS-480 for awhile. I just unboxed the Burnin’ Sax alto and have been playing it for an hour with with a Burnin’ Sax 6 alto mouthpiece that I purchased while renting the Yamaha. What a pleasure it has been to play this instrument – easy to blow and with great intonation from low Bb to high F#. My initial impression is that the tone on this instrument is a little darker and warmer than the YAS-480. So it should fit in well in any type of band. And paired with the right mouthpiece, I will bet you can make this thing scream! This is a great choice for a parent that wants to buy an instrument for their beginning student, or for the grizzled musician playing in a rock or funk band in a sketchy bar in a sketchy part of town who doesn’t want anything to happen to their $23,000 Selmer Paris 92 (buy 30 of these instead and give one away after each gig)! For a first sax, or back up sax, or for an alto that is not your primary instrument, I don’t think that you can go wrong with this purchase. And with the money you save you can play around with some really interesting mouthpieces!

The Better Sax alto saxophone is phenomenal! It feels very smooth and the sound is crisp and clean. It provides a nice full warm tone and allows me to plays notes very soft and quickly. I would describe it as a versatile alto saxophone for sure. I researched many reviews before buying and found that the Better Sax alto saxophone stacks up with other saxophones that are a lot more expensive. It provides a sound that is definitely above its price range. I would highly recommend the Better Sax alto saxophone. This is going to be my go to alto saxophone from here on out.

We bought this as an upgrade for our 12-yr-old grandson, who has been playing sax since he was 8. He was so happy when he opened the box and saw it, he cried. We love supporting his musical interests and growth. It is a gift to as well to watch his progress share his joy in music.
Gerry C. –
I have enjoyed playing my new alto sax ! It plays very well ! It is perfect! I recommend it to all sax players !
Woody H. –
I’ve played many different horns, at every level. My last horns were Selmer Super Action 80. I had to stop playing the sax due to an injury, and sold both my Selmers. Two years later, after healing, I first rented a horn to see if I could go back to playing. That went well, so I bought the BetterSax alto. It plays much better than the Yamaha 480 I rented. It is easier playing and much lighter than my former SA80.
It plays easily from low Bb to high F#. The intonation is better than my Selmers. It is a fabulous horn, with a delightful tone, really nice keywork, and it’s light!!
My only complaint is the positioning of the Bis. It’s offset towards the left. I’m used to having it directly under the B, because I like to roll my index finger into it. In this configuration, it is a little awkward. Minor complaint. I’ll get used to it.
Love the horn!

Hands-down, the best sax value I’ve ever come across. I played professionally for a number of years in my younger days and have always been a Yamaha fan (I play a Yamaha YTS-62 Tenor and a Yamaha Custom Z alto). I bought the Better Sax Alto after listening to YouTube comparison play tests against the Selmer Mark VI, where the Better Sax sounded shockingly good, and certainly more in-tune. Frankly, after having played this Better Sax alto for several weeks, I’ve put the Custom Z away, preferring instead the sound and setup on the Better Sax ( Although the Yamaha V1 alto neck does sound outstanding on the Bettersax.) I certainly recommend this horn for young players, due to how in-tune and free-blowing it is, which allows for immediate success and encouragement for the new player. But attention seasoned players…you’ll be very pleasantly surprised. Well-done Jay Metcalf!
Eric T. –
First of all it’s under a great line of saxophone history. Yes it’s made in china. But it plays like it was made here! Even the mouthpiece it comes with is pretty decent. The pearls and fingerings are placed comfortably and I would recommend this to anyone. Can’t wait to try the better sax tenor! Hopefully they come out with a bari Too
Jess S. –
I don’t even know where to begin. I bought this BetterSax Alto and it was delivered last week. It is absolutely the best Alto for the money and, if I’m being honest, it is easily worth way more than the asking price. Let me give some back story…
I first started playing Saxophone during the 1989-1990 school year when I was in 6th grade. I landed on the Tenor Sax and played it all the way through my Junior Year in High School. I did everything from Concert Band to Marching Band with my Tenor. When I graduated, at some point I needed to pay rent and had to sell my Tenor. I never got around to getting another one over the years.
Fast Forward roughly 25 years…
I saw this Alto while looking around Sweetwater and didn’t know anything about the brand. I had never heard of BetterSax before, nor did I know who Jay Metcalf was. I decided that NOW was the time to pick up the Sax again and an Alto would be more portable (and more affordable) than a Tenor. Had the BetterSax Tenor been available, I might have gone that route anyway.
So here we are. I hadn’t played the sax in decades. While waiting for my Alto to get delivered I started gathering resources I’d need to refresh on how to play and binging on YouTube videos. That’s when I came across Jay’s videos and realized after a few that he was the guy behind the sax I just purchased. His videos were great and I felt fairly prepared for when my Alto arrived.
I can’t believe how nice this Alto is. It is WAY better than the Tenor I had growing up. It sounds so good and is really easy to play. The finish on it is spectacular! Within an hour of my first practice session, I remembered how to read music, knew the corrisponding fingerings for the notes, and was effectively playing some modern tunes. Not well, mind you, but you could tell what they were. My wife was both super proud and exceptionally angry with the ease at which I picked the Sax right back up.
My only complaint is that the neck strap is pretty cheap and seemed a bit short but that was remedied a couple days later when the new one I ordered from Sweetwater arrived.
Whether you’re a seasoned player just getting back into the swing of things, or brand new and wanting to learn to play the Sax, this BetterSax Alto is absolutely your best choice and your wallet will thank you too! Don’t waste any more time and get one of these Saxophones. You won’t regret it! I’m already planning on buying the tenor sooner rather than later.

You often hear people use the phrase “good for the money” when it comes to instruments or other gear. It can have a vague or unintentionally misleading meaning. So, let me speak clearly about this horn. In my experience, it is a very good alto at ANY price. PERIOD.
I’ve played virtually all of the major brand and model horns imaginable. Vintage, new, student, intermediate, professional, etc… This is an absolutely usable instrument in every way. It sounds good with excellent intonation, response, and very comfortable keywork. I gigged on mine the day after I received it and could not have been more pleased with the experience.
I’ll say again—It’s a very good saxophone at any price. And at this price range (sub $, I bought at $), I think it’s unbeatable.
Alberto –
nothing short of amazing. I was looking for something affordable and for beginners. When I heard about this saxophone, at first I was reluctant to buy it, but I did research and decided to purchase the instrument. I have had for a month and has exceeded my expectations.
Nathan P. –
I am a private saxophone instructor, two of my students are now using the BetterSax Alto. My students love their instruments. It’s really an amazing horn for the money. It delivers on build quality, ergonomics, tone and its dark gold lacquer good looks.
As a performing saxophone player as well, I would have no problem taking this sax on a gig and set up with my personal mouthpiece, ligature and reed.
Randy W. –
I originally got this horn so I could better play with my students, most of which are alto players. After unboxing and playing it for awhile, I’m in love. Super great quality horn for a pretty low price.
Mark D. –
Being a semi-pro sax player with a Selmer tenor and soprano (each with JodyJazz mouthpieces and, of course, BetterSax jazz reeds), the BetterSax Alto, with the Burnin’ #7 mouthpiece, JodyJazz power ring ligature, and BetterSax reeds is GREAT! I understand this horn was developed for beginners/students, and I wanted an alto to “Fill the void”, and this horn does it beautifully! Especially with the mouthpiece/reed set-up. The response and intonation across the range of the horn is great, and I can hit altissimo notes with no effort (unlike on my tenor)! My wife “suffers” through me practicing daily, and when I started playing the alto, she absolutely loves it!
I also want to shout out to Sweetwater and my personal contact, Alan Gribble. The instrument set-up was perfect. Alan took the time to contact me just before, and just after, I got my order to see if all was ok. He took some time with me to tell some stories and is a true professional. In the shipments, Sweetwater stickers are included, and I plan to stick one up on the places that my main gig venue has stickers (mostly craft beer businesses). I highly recommend Sweetwater for all your instrument and accessory needs!
TR –
The horn plays as well as the pro models I’ve owned, at a fraction of the cost. Beautiful instrument, well made, borrowing vital features from top of the line pro models!
Dan –
I purchased this saxophone for my best friend that has been playing for approximately 55 years. he took the sax out of case put it together and started to play, he and I couldn’t believe the sound, he said it was very easy to play. Four days later he played it at a gig his band had, the members were surprised with the tone. Thinking about purchasing one for my grandson who’s been playing for 7 years.
Tony E. –
After a few weeks of use, I am pretty happy with the horn. It seems to be built well and has better intonation than my old Vito student horn I am replacing. I am not a fan of the case. Its unbalanced and awkard to get the horn out. If there is anything in the pocket then when i grab the horn it flops backwards. Straps are okay, but not removable. Its suitable for kids, so I get it’s purpose. But I pulled out a better case I had on hand immediately and put the included case back in the box. However, I like the horn so much I really can’t dock my score for it in the end. It’s a great saxaphone and it doesn’t cost as much as a used car, what more could you want.
Jason –
Great starter! Been loving every moment
Val –
I ordered this to replace a rental Yamaha YAS-26. Out of the box, there were issues with lower notes like E. Showed it to a saxophone instructor and they recommended to have it looked at by a tech. The tech had never seen this model before. He noticed there were a few dings and bends (which I hadn’t noticed). He made a few adjustments and gave it a thumbs up after that. The tech only charged $ for the adjustments.
So either Sweetwater’s full inspection was not as full as it is claimed or the instrument sustained damage after that.
Overall this is a good value. Just expect to take it to a tech when you receive it.
Rory E. –
I am brand new to sax although I’ve played bass, guitar, and keys for over 50 years. I also started cello lessons a little over 2 years ago. I decided to take up learning the sax but did not want to begin formal lessons as I’m still taking cello lessons. After watching some of Jay’s videos I figured “I can do this, this guy is good at communicating.” Once I made my decision to proceed I needed a saxophone, of course. After watching Jay’s video regarding the Bettersax alto I decide to go with that instead of some $ thing from Amazon. I’m glad I did! This sax is awesome and has such a great sound even though I’m beginning on my embouchure. Within 4 days I was able to play Amazing Grace by ear. I’ve now had the Bettersax alto for 1 week and the quality of the instrument coupled with Jay’s tutorials has given me a lot of encouragement because I am certainly progressing fast than I expected.
So, in short, great sax and awesome tutorials. Most of all I’m having a lot of fun!

I mainly play the tenor sax, but I was looking for an alto as a backup. I received this for Christmas from my husband this year (he was coached a bit), and I have to say I’m impressed. This horn feels so nice under my fingers, and it provides the perfect amount of resistance. The sound I’m getting on it with my JodyJazz Jet 7 is full and is is wonderfully tuned.
And for less than $!
I wholeheartedly recommend this for beginners, advancing players, and doublers who don’t want to break the bank.

I want to say, I am not an expert saxophone plyer by any means. I have been playing off and on since 2011 and I am 48 yers old. I decided to buy this Better Sax Alto because I am a student of Jay Metcalf. I moved 4.5 years ago and have not played since. About 2 months ago, I had a heart attack and while on convolescence, I made a decision to pick it up again. I received this Saxophone on Thursday (5 days ago).
1st the bad: The ligature and mouthpiece cover do not fit the BetterSax Classic mouthpiece. They appear to be for the original generic mouthpiece that used to come with the horn.
That’s it, there is no other bad.
2nd: The thing plays on the BetterSax Classic mouthpiece in tune from top to bottom. After test playing it with the mouthpiece, I put it back in the case and put my setup on it. I use a Di’Adario Select Jazz 6 DM with a 2 Medium Di’Adario Select Jazz Unfiled reed and a Rovener MK III Ligature. It plays in tune top to bottom with it too. (I just like the sound of the moutpiece stup better.) I have another older Chinese made Alto that I bought in 2011 in South Korea (it works just fine and I did not need a new alto). However, on the older horn, I have to really put forth effort to get the low B and low Bb, I also have to work hard to get the high E, Eb, F and F#. On my new BetterSax Alto, not work at all to get these notes out.
The erorogonomics on this thing are absolutely AMAZING!!!! Jay really did this right. The Bb Bis key is off set to the left instead of the right. This too a couple of tries to get used to, but I also have a 1924 Beuscher True Tone and the Bis key is also offset the same way. so after a few tries, it was no issue. My fingers easily lay on the key touches comfortably. The indented key touches make it very comfortable.
The Cognac laquer finishe is a nice touch. When I first pulled it out of the case, I thought it was a bit bright, but that was the lighting. After looking over closer, it is definitely darker than your average brass. The underslung octive key is a nice touch. The BetterSax logo on the neck is nice too. There is also a BetterSax logo on the key guard on the back side of the horn. Nice touch.
The case is nice and light weight. Though I do not travel with my horn very often and use a saxophone stand to store the horn, I will likely not use it often, but it is vey nice. I do wish it had hooks instead of a zipper, but that is not a big deal. Also, the case does not stay open making it difficult to take the horn out without the lid dropping on it. Use 2 hands, no trouble.
Lastly, I have to say, as a 1st time Sweetwater customer, I was very impressed to have a sales associate assigned to me was awesome. Pepe called me, texted me, and e-mailed me immediately upon signing up on the webpage. He also helped and I got an additional small discount on the horn. Great Job Pepe, Thank you!!
I look forward to playing this horn for years to come. I love it 100% and the more I play it (an hour every day and 2 hours yesterday) the more I love it!

Great saxophone. Bought mine for $ , and thy had some open box on a brand new without the accessories (most experienced players already have a mouthpiece, strap, etc). Now that this saxophone is $I’d recommend just buying that Yamaha yas-280 that is around $brand new. It’s just a better sax, better name, and better resale value. Parts more available and repair shops we all fix it. Some might not touch the bettersax or complain about the sax. Just get the yamah yas-280. Has F# key, and keys match the finish. Also the yamaha has a better case.
If the better sax goes on sale for $ then I’d pick one up. It’s a good sax for elementary-high school. Even as a back to sax. But again, I’d chose the yamaha yas280 personally
william s. –
I love it. I matched it to a Claude Delangle mouthpiece and 2.25 legere reed. It plays wonderfully from top to bottom, and in tune. The projection is great when you need it. It came ready to play right out of the box. The sweetwater set up was magnificent! I had other horns costing much more that needed adjusting. Packed excellently, horn was well protected. The candies were appreciated and gone in 2 min.

From a beginner’s perspective… Love the sax itself, but the mouthpiece it comes with is unusable for me. Good thing I also included with my order a Yamaha 4C, as my research showed you can’t go wrong with it as a beginner’s mouthpiece. I probably would have returned the sax thinking it just isn’t for me, if it wasn’t for the difference the 4C makes. Now that I think of it, maybe I did just get a bad Bettersax mouthpiece. Let’s see what happens if I want to exchange it.

I purchased the BetterSax Classic Alto as a backup to my 1958 Selmer Paris M6 which is out for repair. I was immediately impressed with the quality of this instrument. The ease of play and intonation are actually superior to the M6, and the sound is just as sweet! I have taken this horn out to two practice sessions, and my bandmates were unaware that I was playing a different horn, they did not detect any difference. Thank you Jay Metcalf for creating such a quality affordable instrument!
Jim F. –
I have only been playing for two years and started on an old Yamaha Vito. For me this has been such a fantastic improvement in my playing. I love the sound and the ergonomics of this sax. The Octave key position is so easy to use without moving my thumb at all. Big bonus. I am also using the Better Sax mouthpiece that came with it and I can’t say enough good things about it.

I recently purchased the better sax Alto. I started on alto in grade school and played it 15 years before moving to tenor to play in bands. I sold My Selmer MKVII alto I had begun with. It never really played that well so I got rid of it. Over the years, I only played cheap student horns when I needed one for teaching. I have played MKVI tenors for the last 40 years or so. I wanted to get back into alto without breaking the bank so I took a chance on Jay’s horn and I really like it. Ergonomics are great, intonation is good and it does everything that you would want your alto to do. My only complaint was that with all the hype about Conn-Selmer’s quality control and Sweetwater’s 40 point check, I should not of had to put a leek light down it and make some adjustments for it to play as it should. Low C# was not sealing completely and the low B to C# spatula mechanism took some adjusting so the low register would sing. Had I not been working on my own horns for years ( Martin & Selmer’s) I probably would not of known what to look for I probably would of wrote a much different review. After Tweaking, the horn plays really very well.

I’m coming back to the alto after 50 years when I played with a university jazz workshop. While I dearly love and still have my 1935 Selmer that I used back then, I thought it was time for an upgrade. The BetterSax Classic with the Burnin’ 5 mouthpiece is a terrific instrument combo at a likewise terrific price, very well made, fun and secure to play for an essential re-beginner, with a tone that advances my playing from “between the wars” to the 21st century. Support for beginners is proactive and well detailed, and Jay puts his personal imprint on it all.

I’ve been playing this alto sax for a few weeks now and I really enjoy it. It plays well and is easy to play. The action is smooth and responsive. The keys and pads were set correctly out of the box and I haven’t noticed any leaks. The lower notes are far easier to play than my previous alto sax. This is a solid sax and a great value.
My only quibble with it is the case. It’s a solid case and I think it would do well for a school student. It protects the sax very well. I just wish it was a bit larger so that it could hold my music folder, had a little more internal storage, and that I could disconnect the backpack straps (without scissors).
