Belief in Your Musical Journey

Brad teaches us that to truly excel in music, especially in improvisational fields like jazz, it’s crucial to first believe in and trust in yourself. You have to accept that not everyone will appreciate your style, but that is okay and it is key to finding and expressing your true self. As you grow in confidence and individuality, your unique voice will come out. In his teachings, he explains that once students overcome the fear of judgment, they can genuinely be themselves and shine in their unique way.

UNT Jazz Studies

Brad Leali’s approach at UNT involves a comprehensive curriculum that prepares students not just in jazz performance but also in classical techniques, ensuring they are versatile musicians. The program is renowned for its rigorous training, including transcription assignments from various instrumentalists to help students understand different musical roles and styles.

He also highlights the psychological aspects of improvisation, emphasizing the importance of trusting the process and oneself. He encourages open, honest conversations with students, helping them accept constructive criticism and use it as a tool for growth. This holistic approach nurtures well-rounded musicians who are prepared for diverse professional opportunities.

Brad explains that students are required to learn to play multiple instruments, specifically flute and clarinet, in addition to their primary instrument. This is a crucial aspect of the curriculum, as the ability to play doubles is essential for their versatility and future career opportunities. Additionally, piano is a mandatory part of the curriculum, reinforcing its foundational importance.

The program emphasizes the necessity for students to be well-rounded musicians, and recognizes that a successful career often demands more than proficiency in just one instrument. To prepare students for the realities of the music industry, the program includes courses in arranging, songwriting, and music business, adapting to the rapidly changing landscape influenced by the internet, social media, and emerging technologies like AI.

Our conversation delves into these things and lots more, be sure to watch the full interview.
