Jay Metcalf and JodyJazz do it again!! Pleasantly surprised by the tone, power and ease of playability of this piece, which, when I first looked it over, appeared to be a copy inside and out of the JodyJazz HR☆ I had been using which is NOT a bad thing at all, but I didn’t want two of the same thing. It is its own mouthpiece, nearly the same power and tone of a metal piece with the comfort of hard rubber with an attractive matte finish and very comfortable feeling. A winner and a keeper!!!

Burnin’ blends the best of Jody Jazz HR* and SuperJet. Easy & even blowing from low Bb all the way to altissimo.

I’m giving this superb mouthpiece 5 Stars. I play mostly tenor and alto, but in the last few years have spent plenty of practice time with the soprano. I’ve been playing a Kessler HR 5 mouthpiece, tip opening 0.062″, and was quite happy with it for jazz/pop/blues, paired with Legere Signature or American Cut 2.25 strength reeds. When I received the Burnin’ 6*, tip opening 0.065″, I first warmed up with the Kessler piece for about 15 minutes, and then switched to the Burnin’. Here are my observations: 1. I was immediately shocked by how much more open, free-blowing and just easier to play it was in comparison. Even though the tip openings were practically identical, the Burnin’ blew more like an alto! 2. Regarding response and intonation, every note sounded instantly and effortlessly, and, also in comparison, there was way less need for embouchure and voicing adjustment to stay in tune and have good tone all up and down the full range. 3. The lowest notes all popped right out at full tone, and it was easy to whisper the subtone confidently all the way down to Bb. 4. I don’t do altissimo on soprano, but the keyed high F# and G sounded with greater reliability and consistency than I was used to. 5. The sound quality is also really nice for me. It’s punchy and bright enough at full volume, but warm (the opposite of shrill) overall. 6. Lastly, and for me most notably, this new mouthpiece provided me with a considerably expanded dynamic range, especially for pianissimo. With the Kessler, I could only get quiet to a certain point before all sound stopped; it was impossible to taper off all the way. With the Burnin’, I can reduce the air stream to almost nothing and still maintain a barely perceptible audible note. ***** Oh, I like it a LOT.

I started playing soprano saxophone about 10 months ago. I have a Yamaha 475II. It came with a 4C mouthpiece and I later switched to the 5C and found it somewhat better. Not a big difference in sound. I just received the BetterSax Soprano Burnin 5* mouthpiece. I’m blown away by the difference in the sound. Until now I had no idea what a difference a mouthpiece could make. After my first practice session I also realized how much easier it was to play, and articulate. I think just the excellent sound made me play better. I’m really excited about this new mouthpiece. Way to go Jay Metcalf and Jody Jazz.

I’ve recently started using the BetterSax Burnin’ Soprano Saxophone mouthpiece, and I’m thoroughly impressed with its exceptional performance. From the moment I started playing, I noticed an immediate improvement in tone clarity, projection, and ease of play.

The Burnin’ mouthpiece offers a beautifully balanced tonal quality—rich and warm in the lower register while bright and vibrant in the upper ranges. It’s incredibly responsive, allowing for effortless articulation and dynamic control. Whether playing softly or pushing the sound, this mouthpiece handles everything with precision and consistency.

One of the most impressive aspects is how easy it is to achieve excellent intonation across the instrument’s entire range. The Burnin’ mouthpiece helps create a full, rich sound that’s versatile enough for jazz, pop, or classical contexts, enhancing my overall playing experience significantly.

The build quality and finish are top-notch, offering comfort during extended playing sessions. Additionally, the sleek and professional look complements the quality of craftsmanship (Jody Jazz) that clearly went into its design.

Overall, the BetterSax Burnin’ Soprano Saxophone mouthpiece has greatly improved my playing experience. I highly recommend it to both intermediate and professional saxophonists looking to upgrade their sound and performance capabilities.

I went into this purchase with high expectations, since I’ve been playing on the alto & tenor versions of the Burnin mouthpiece for a couple years. This one didn’t disappoint. I’ve already listed my old mouthpiece for sale. Full sound with a nice amount a brilliance on the top end…EASY to play. I love these mouthpieces.

This is my new favorite mouthpiece for soprano! It makes the intonation so much easier to control and has a great sound!

Praise for Burnin' Mouthpieces

Probably the best alto mouthpiece I’ve ever played. The 6 tip opening is perfect for me.

Jay Metcalf’s BURNIN’ mouthpiece is a revelation. I don’t play alto often and in fact I have shied away from it for years because it was too hard to make the transition from tenor. The fact that I could put Jay’s mouthpiece on my alto, slap a reed on and get a great sound with flexibility right away was spectacular. I recommend it very highly and I’m sure those who try it will be equally enthusiastic.

I’m very proud of the BetterSax, BURNIN‘ Saxophone Mouthpiece because I believe that we created exactly what Jay asked for. A very free-blowing classic Hard Rubber Jazz Mouthpiece with a nice amount of Brightness. Jay’s design ideas, a prominent rollover baffle into a deep chamber, worked beautifully making the BURNIN‘ mouthpiece one of the all-time great mouthpieces.
Jody Espina

I really enjoy playing on this mouthpiece. There’s a warmth and huskiness to the sound but also a brightness with some added air. Versatile over the entire range of the saxophone. Jay hit the nail on the head with this one.

The Burnin’ (HR) tenor sax mouthpiece had one of the darkest, warmest and lush tenor saxophone tones I have experienced. It was really sultry, buttery and sexy sounding and the sub-tones were just so smooth and lush sounding.

To my fellow alto sax players... please do yourself a favor and grab this BURNIN' mouthpiece. Make sure you pick up the ring ligature (amazing response with it). This free-blowing piece gives me all the sizzle and body that a hard hitting sax player would want. I'll be selling my other high end pieces as this BURNIN' piece just replaced them all.

I've never been one for metal, although secretly I wanted to be, most metal pieces were too harsh for me or too difficult to control. This piece gives me the power that I wanted from metal while retaining the balance l've grown to love with rubber. Excited to see what sounds are possible!

The BetterSax Burnin’ metal tenor saxophone mouthpiece is a great tenor saxophone mouthpiece for those looking for a versatile tenor sax mouthpiece that can sound great on a jazz ballad or in a big band, while also providing the option of pushing the sound to a more powerful, aggressive and brighter tone when needed for louder genres of music like rock, pop or R&B. The tone does seem to lean more to the brighter side compared to the Burnin’ hard rubber version but I still consider the metal Burnin’ tenor saxophone mouthpiece to be in that tonal range of sound that makes it highly adaptable and versatile for all kinds of music.

I enjoyed this mouthpiece overall as it was free-blowing, easy to articulate with, and had a dark overall sound, particularly in the bottom range, but when pushed, you hear the brights, especially in the upperstack

What Burnin' Mouthpiece Players are saying...

Yesterday I received my Burnin #7 tenor mouthpiece and had the opportunity to play it for a few hours. I have been playing for over fifty years and have used many different mouthpieces. I must say hands down this is the the best one I have ever used. From the second I started to play it felt great. The sound and dynamics are incredible. I can only imagine how this will sound with a few more hours of play time. You and your team have done an outstanding job. Thank you! Keep up the good work.

I have the BetterSax Burnin' soprano mouthpiece from Sweetwater. At first thought it might just be a redesigned JodyJazz HR*.I was wrong, must say pleasantyly surprised! I have and compared both, the Burnin' is noticeably brighter, more powerful and actually plays easier. That completes my quartet of Burnin' mouthpieces, I must say all four of them are awesome!

I recently received the Burnin' Bari mpc. I play a 1960 Conn 12M Using a Silverstein Lig and a Fibracell #3 reed..WOW!! I can get a tonal range from Gerry Mulligan to Ronnie Cuber!! This piece is so amazing, I ordered one for Alto and Tenor. I tested my Burnin' on my 1927 Conn Alto, and was almost brought to tears. I have been searching for years to find a piece that works perfectly with my alto. The search is over!! Can't wait to test the tenor piece tonight on my 1937 Conn 10M. THANK YOU!!

Well, after only an hour or so with the Burnin’ 7*, all I can say is WOW!  Having only played on metal mouthpieces (primarily from Jody and Theo) for the better part of 20 years, I wasn’t quite sure how I would adapt to the Burnin’, but it is absolutely incredible!  Plenty of projection, yet I can play soft and warm when needed.  Altissimo all the way down to low Bb is a breeze.  Intonation is spot on.  I can’t think of one thing that I’d change.

Thank you for having designed such an amazing mouthpiece. I've been trying it for a month and at the moment, all my old tenor mouthpieces are posted in wallapop to be sold I'm looking forward to coming back home from work every day to play the saxophone with it. It's a real pleasure.

Yeah 20 minutes and I was in love. I've been on a Theo Wanne Lakshmi 6* for quite a while. The Burnin' metal tenor is as good as, if not better, particularly up in the altissimo. They pop out with perfect intonation right up to F an octave above standard front F on the horn. Generally a very pleasing warm tone. The bottom end including subtoning are buttery smooth. When pushed it can be very Brecker.

You mentioned that the new Better Sax Metal mouthpiece for Tenor was one of the best you have played. Based on your recommendation, knowing the kind of person you are, with the heart of a teacher, I decided I would give it a try. Man, you were spot on. That is a great playing piece and as I get more used to it, I am certain I will be doing things on Tenor that I never was able to accomplish on my old setup. I tell everyone about you in Texas.... my students, other players, strangers!!! I have been playing and teaching for many years...! tell my wife all the time that I wish I had had you for a teacher when I was a young guy. I would have saved a lot of time learning the hard way.

It is such a beautiful piece of art!!! So well made. I picked it up, put a reed (that didn't quite fit) on and was so surprised by its immediate response throughout the whole range. I normally play a 10mfan Showtime 7** which asks for slightly lighter reeds (DSJ 2M/H) as it has a 2,76mm opening. That was too light for the burnin. So i put on a 2H and a 3S...but both didnt work too well. Either it started squeaking (too soft?) Or it was hard to play. Luckily enough i had a Vandoren Red Box 2,5 here....put it on and everything worked perfectly!!! Normally i play in a Jazz Combo and an Orchestra but now, for my new Soul Band, i needed something more powerful. And the burnin can offer tons of power! But having tested the burnin metal so far.. i am a little afraid that might be just a little too big of a step because of its brightness! That piece can be a beast....haha. Not so at all at lower volumes, though! It is indeed versatile.

I was looking for a new tenor mouthpiece. I had a list of mouthpieces I thought might hit the target. I wanted a brighter sound with more punch whilst at the same time giving me a rounder less strained lower Bb. A tall order! Sax Co are really helpful with guidance. We reduced my list to 8 mouthpieces and Sax Co set me up with the 8 mouthpieces to try. After 60 + minutes of switching between all the mouthpieces, it was clear that the Better Sax BURNIN' Tenor 6* was just right for me; the brightness and depth of sound were great, and for me, easily the best choice to make. I found the sound and notes are easier to hit over the full range of the instrument. Also I am so pleased with the low Bb! In all, a great mouthpiece which is a joy to play
