Why are Saxophone Bells Offset?

Level up your saxophone playing today!

If you have ever wondered why your saxophone bell shape appears a little offset when looking at it, this article aims to answer that question for you and explain why our BetterSax saxophone bells are offset.

Most all modern saxophones from the top premium French manufacturing facilities, to the high end Japanese factories, to low cost saxophone manufacturers, have offset bells. The reason for the offset bells is related to the playing position of saxophonists, whether they are sitting or standing.

When playing the saxophone, it is common for saxophonists to hold the instrument at an angle, rather than directly straight up and down. This allows the left hand to be on the top keys and the right hand to be on the lower keys.

As a result, when the saxophone is held straight up and down, the bell appears offset. However, when it is actually being played, the bell is directed in a more straight position, despite being held at an angle.

To help illustrate this, the first photo shows a BetterSax alto saxophone next to a Selmer Supreme alto saxophone, both with offset bells. You can see the bell position in relation to the rest of the instrument.

The second photo demonstrates how the horn is held in a standing position, showcasing the angle at which it is typically played.
