Lakecia Benjamin’s Musical Journey
Lakecia Benjamin’s journey began in Washington Heights, New York, where she grew up in a predominantly Dominican neighborhood, surrounded by Latin music. Her passion for music led her to audition for LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, where she was introduced to jazz. Under the mentorship of prominent musicians and through rigorous practice, Lakecia honed her skills and developed a unique sound.
Despite initial setbacks in securing a spot in prestigious music schools, her determination and relentless pursuit of excellence led her to study with jazz legends and eventually perform globally. Her experience underscores the importance of resilience and the transformative power of music, both in her personal growth and in connecting with audiences worldwide.
Car Accident in 2021
Lakecia describes the experience of a severe car accident while on her way home from a gig in 2021. She has no memory of the accident itself but was luckily located by a man who stopped to investigate why there was smoke coming from the wooded area next to the highway. Her injuries included a brain bleed, a broken jaw, scapula, and three ribs. Despite the trauma of that accident, she recovered, wrote new music for what would become her newest album Phoenix, and eventually earned three Grammy nominations, showing how small steps forward can lead to significant achievements.
The Importance of Persistence and Gratitude
Lakecia explains how success in music, like any other field, requires persistent effort and a positive mindset. Even renowned musicians face moments of doubt and adversity, but they push through by focusing on their passion and dedication. She has overcome many challenges throughout her career, and highlights the importance of perseverance when faced with those challenges. She explains how musicians must take each opportunity to grow and learn, understanding that setbacks are part of the process.
Recording performances, practicing diligently, and accepting current skill levels while striving for improvement are vital steps. The key is to remain committed, continuously seek improvement, stay grateful for every experience and lesson learned. Lakecia Benjamin is definitely a testament to all of these things in everything that she does.
